Thread: The UK SME's

    The UK SME's

As part of Nissan's decision to stay in Sunderland they are also moving manufacturing and development of car batteries to the UK. What a fantastic and unexpected bonus from Brexit. I am confident that despite the fantasy that as the 5th to 8th biggest economy in the world (depending on what figures you use) the UK is unimportant that if barriers continue between the UK and EU businesses will look to innovate.

And this is where us Brits are the best in Europe. Something Europeans know but we seem not to is we are great entrepreneurs. So much so there are more SME's in the UK than in France and Germany combined with turnover and numbers employed to match.

My next door neighbour's son got made redundant from a recruitment company last year. Not great timing as he had just bought a house in London and become a dad. In September he went and got some financial backers who has never met face to face and set up a recruitment agency specialising in finding staff for 'Start Up' companies. He must be doing OK although he has never met a customer as he just taken on his first member of staff who has also never met.

My own lad is close to setting up a new business taking advantage of an opportunity provided by Covid.

Nothing but admiration for our small business owners so badly hit by so much but so much more nimble, flexible and willing to risk take than our European neighbours.

There's a lot of water to go under the bridge before it's a goer. All I'll say is it's travel related. Bonds required scares me to death but he's confident and it's his inheritance money.

Interested in your post ref changing direction. Serious? I don't envy you the stress and strain but I do envy you the challenge. I am so bored I crave stimulation. I've had a piece of land locally brought to my attention that seems to be undervalued (not that unusual) that I might just be tempted to bid for. Got the online details can't wait for agent to open tomorrow.

    Oh I’m totally serious 923.

In truth, certain events in the last three days have made up my mind completely, I can’t go into details on here at present but I will in a few weeks.

I’ve kept giving myself reasons to stay involved in my trade but this latest event has made this a certainty.

There’s too many moving parts for an almost 60 year old brain to stay on top of and all the red tape and legal stuff is nightmarish.

A lot of my wealth is tied up in stock, my worksite and in retained profit in the business.

I’m planning on separating my business premises into a new business and letting my son in law and daughter buy the retail operation from me over time.

I do rental houses anyway so I’ll either rent the warehouse to the retail operation, rent it out to someone else for a lot more or, I’ve got a pre app in at the moment to build 24 apartments so I might just sell it on once I’ve got that through.

I can’t see me doing nothing over the next 10-15 years but whatever I do it’ll be virtually devoid of stress.

If I were you I’d definitely go for that land.

If you get it you can do it at your own speed and it’s not like the land is going to lose value.

As I’ve got older my working life has got more complicated and it’s now hurting me mentally and physically, the long term stress is now manifesting itself in a horrible way.

Got to feel for the small business owners. No way do after all their hard work do they deserve the sh1t that has come their way.

We do have a so much more positive attitude than our neighbours.

A few years after I set up we got friendly with a couple from Munich. I explained how

Whilst I was thinking about it in the pub I bumped into 'the big boss' of where I was working.

I decided to confide in him. He was supportive, gave me a couple of tips and told me to go for it.

A few weeks later I was on my own.

    Their comments were

You would never find yourself drinking with your big boss.

Never talk to a boss about leaving and certainly not expect encouragement

Couldn't believe I could get started in just a few weeks

There is a culture in Germany of not trying for fear of failure.

In France are some labour laws that make it difficult for small businesses to expand.

In my circle of friends there are at least 3 who have left the company they were working for and set up in competition. One a builders merchant (richest man I know) one selling nuts and bolts retired at 51 (his analogy was he was in a speed boat running rings around the big oil tankers that was the opposition) and one who now owns a chain of local estate agents.

I am positive our youngsters will be very good at taking opportunities that Brexit will IMO inevitably provide but at the same time not make light of the the present difficulties.

PS know exactly what you mean about too many moving parts and brain age.

Got some more details and we although it has planning for a 3 bed detached we are really not keen on the approved house. If we want to go ahead that means weeks of waiting whilst planners ponder. Our very local planning office was much more flexible and helpful than the 3 immediately surrounding but that was true 15 years ago might have changed.

Not sure if what I suspect will be months of little activity will be good for my mood or detrimental.

There you go. You're passing onto the next generation, we're seriously considering funding our lad and next door's lad is showing us all the way Covid, Brexit or owt else move over.
