Pre new money we were as big as Man City and certainly bigger than Chelsea, they just got lucky with their new owners but we got stuck with Ashley. No reason why we couldn’t challenge again if we had the right backing but as things stand we are more likely to swap places with Sunderland.

Well that's the nightmare scenario, isn't it. They're the ones with a billionaire owner now and the way both teams are going, we could both easily meet briefly in the same division next season before we continue on our downward trajectory. Can anone make a convincing case as to why, if we go down, we wouldn't crash straight out of that division at the opposite end?

This could well be our 'sliding doors' season which, if it goes wrong, could see us in a footballing no man's land for years and years. And if you think that's overly-pessimistic, then look at the Chimpo-and even League 1 because they're littered with once-big clubs who are probably trying to work out how they've ended up where they are.

Of course, what makes this worse is that we'll know exactly how we got there and what makes it doubly worse is that it's still preventable. We can see it coming because this will be the third bastard time it's happened on fatso's watch and it beggars belief that it's happening all over again and they're doing nothing about it.

Shower of cunts they are, the lot of them.
