I can't imagine him in the Scotland squad if he doesn't kick a ball before the end of the season. As for the contract extension trigger - at the virtual AGM Alan Burrows said, in effect, don't believe all that you read in the papers.

If Gallagher doesn't play from February to the end of the season there's no way he's in the Euro squad.

And presumably if he doesn't care about that it's because he thinks he can have a deal in place regardless - with a club that doesn't mind him being out of match practice and having shown he's willing to cause problems in the dressing room.

That's not impossible by any means in football but still seems a stretch to me.

I appreciate some fans will insist we should play hardball with him but doing that in our situation is certainly cutting off our nose to spite our face. We could recognize his form is (or was, at least) beyond what we had any right to hope from his signing and that this next contract is the only big one to set him up for the rest of his life he'll ever have in his career. He needs to realise too that simply refusing to play again until we let him go for nowt isn't realistic either. With a bit of compromise this can still be a win-win rather than the lose-lose it looks like heading towards now.

I’m quite certain that had Gallagher not gotten into the Scottish team he’d still be playing regularly pushing himself to do better.
His head has been turned by those he was around and he flipped a switch, believing he deserved to be at a bigger club.
Good for him he got his chance and took it but it doesn’t matter that had others been available for those games things would be a whole different currently.
Very difficult to accept that he is really out due to injury.
The preponderance of circumstances all point in another direction.
