There were no 'nature studies' at Accy Grammar Balan, how could there be, it was the 50s, early 60's, Accy Grammar was situated on Blackburn Rd, just a couple of hundred yards from the old steam engine sheds. There was no nature to study, and if there had have been you wouldn't have been able to see it through the permanent gloom of smoke and smog that enveloped the area. You had to be hard, and clever, to survive and prosper at Accy Grammar, as Sub did. They don't make 'em like Sub any more, no Snowflakes back then.

sinkov, you do forget the fact that I lived on the edge of Oswaldtwistle and was very much into helping the groundsman at Church Cricket Club which was always a great opportunity to study nature close up. The worms that used to try to embed themselves into the prepared pitches had to be removed and, once this was done, it was interesting watching the birds arriving to dispose of the rubbish. I also became very proficient at weed control because that is something else that you don't want in your pitches. They were great times as a young lad and I am wondering whether I shoud offer my services to the Indian Cricket Board who obviously are unsure how to prepare a proper pitch which is fair to both sides.
I must have been a privileged white kid in those days, even though my mum and dad worked in 'tmill and we never had nowt, I never, ever went without a meal and life was simple if you just got on and lived it and enjoyed it.
