    Aldershot

A name from the past. It just came into my head and I googled to see what had become of them.
They went bust in 1992, I'm not really up on lower league football but Wolves fan's would remember them as they lost to them in the 1987 Fourth division play offs.
A new club Aldershot Town was formed and they play on the same ground and have the same nickname.
They have a lot in common with Wolves in fact.

I looked up the other day of some clubs I remember playing in the Football League and now no longer such as Darlington who I think had one of the largest stadiums outside the Prem this caused them to go bankrupt and reformed as Darlington 1883.

Then there was Workington who was once managed by Bill Shankly who are now playing in the eighth tier of English football.

I’ve watched Stourbridge FC play both Workington and Darlington as well as Chester, Hereford and Southport.

Workington away was a very special day for me for many reasons, one of those was the fact it was part of one of our historic cup wins and we won 3-1.

We took around 250-300 to that match in foul weather and all got soaked but the 500+ mile round trip was one of my best football day outs ever.

The second reason is that from when I started getting interested in football back in 72 I’d always had a soft spot for Workington as they always seemed to finish in the bottom two or three of the league and have to beg to be re-elected each year.

I felt so sad for them when they lost league status and then watched as their crowds dwindled to pathetic levels.

There’s a really poignant documentary on YouTube about their last home league game in the football league including match footage and fan interviews which I watch every so often, it was so obvious that it was a club with no hope.

I fulfilled a strange childhood obsession by watching a match at their ground that had meaning for me.

    Documentary footage below.
