    Ian ST John

It has just been announced on the BBC that Ian St John has died. My boyhood football hero. RIP Sinjee. Thoughts are with his family and friends.

A sad day. I didn't see his two and a half minute hat-trick but I did watch him score 6 in the 9-2 against Flamengo. Also chased him along Windmillhill St to get his autograph!

Here's a lovely video of St John visiting Fir Park before the 1991 final.

If we list the Ancell Babes as Weir, McSeveney and Holton, Aitken, Martis and McCann, Hunter, Reid, St,John, Quinn and Weir, I think that Ian's passing means that they've all gone now.
I still have a bundle of programmes from that era - and even some 'football special' train tickets; more importantly I have precious memories of some great footballers. 4-0 at Pittodrie! 7-0 against Leeds in a floodlit friendly (J.Charlton at centre half!) and a trip to Broomfield for I think, a cup game. St.John was coming back from injury, as was Doug Baillie, the Diamonds' star No.5. The tussle between the two was eagerly anticipated. Sadly for us, Baillie had a really good day. St.John only got a hat-trick.

He was pants that day - should've grabbed at least 5 !!
