The owners of Notts county, the Youhavingaflaf brothers, said, "We scoured the remotest parts of Scandinavia to come up with a coach who spoke our language both on and off the pitch. This man knows as much about mackerel as he does midfielders. We were looking for someone to fill the boots of Notts county's best recent manager Jamie Fullerton. We think we have succeeded."
Herring replaces some English guy who took them to the playoffs and was on his way to doing the same but "knew absolutely nothing about trawlers" and kept playing OAPs in midfield. Herring said, "I am absolutely certain that I will take Notts County out of this league."
Herring held two Norwegian amateur coaching badges and was employed by Osters Vaxjoe as a ball boy and occasional sponge man in a career lasting 6 weeks. After having 29 managers in less than a decade, the Youhavingalaff brothers confirmed they hoped to get Notts County back to topping their traditional "manager a month" club.
Ricardo Moniz (57) said, "no one approached me."
