It says a lot that we are scraping round to find impact short term signing and have dug up 4 or 5. None in the last 20 years. I suspect we could all name 40 or 50 failures/disasters!

Are you sure about that? He, sadly, only played ten times, in a very effective partnership with Ian Ormondroyd, but was gone by Oct/Nov’ ‘91 if memory serves.

Ironically, entirely on the evidence of last season, Rooney himself was probably the last successful short term signing. Hard to believe but pre the first lockdown he really did make a difference...particularly in terms of set pieces, organisation and marshalling the youngsters.

Unfortunately he was never the same player following the resumption after lockdown last year and didn’t appear to learn the lesson of the difference experience can make...eg John Eustace who, despite the easy ‘play’ on his name, made a huge difference.

P.S. Taylor, Osman and, if you include them, Eustace and Rooney, have all been in the last 20 years, GP.

Only ten games but eight goals, extrapolate that over another five games, four goals, maybe two or three points and we’d have been promoted. Big mistake only keeping him for ten games (if we indeed had any choice)
