    And then "The Damned United".....

Name another football club, in any league, anywhere in the world, at any point in time, that generated and continues to generate the amount of interest (from Leeds fans and others) that LUFC does? No such universe exists.

Amazing bloke - never gets the credit for how articulate and bright he was.

Loved the notes he made and key thing in one of them ENJOY IT.

A character who enriched the lives of those who met him.

Don't want to go back to all the violence, but the namby pamby prima Donna's we have now, who fall to the floor like they have had their faces caved in when it was their foot that got trodden on, they could learn a thing or two about strength of character, loyalty, grit and determination from the likes of Charlton senior.
I used to love the physical challenge of football when I played. Still remember playing for a pub team when I was still a kid and one of their old blokes who was tired of chasing after a young whipper snapper said to me - do that again and I’ll break your f’ing leg.

Some of it was maybe a tad excessive at times but it was a proper physical game.

The desire to sanitise and make safe every aspect of life is really affecting a lot of sport and then opens the door for the Professionals to cheat the system. It is even creeping into rugby

Top programme, from a true, down to earth family, but what a shocking, terrible disease - just slowly destroys, leaving really just an empty shell. Very sad for all concerned

He did indeed look vacant and just a shell at the end, brutally sad, but he done wonders with Ireland, and of course leeds.

One player Charlton got the best out of was Irishman Paul McGrath who reached unimaginable lows in his life.I read a lot of books and McGrath recalled that at his worst in his autobiography (Back from the Brink) as being when so desperate for a drink he decided to drink Domestos before slashing his wrists when at Villa in the 1990s.

Harrowing stuff - but a world that unless you have experienced you can't and have no right to understand.Despite drink issues revolving from a shocking childhood, racism and depression from a young age McGrath for 90 minutes on a football pitch playing for Big Jack was utterly sublime but off it was sadly a tortured soul.

Charlton appeared to have a tremendous endearing warmth which often illness cannot take away no matter how brutal and likewise the shy McGrath with his private mental health demons. Both characters which lessons can be taken from in moving forward through ones life - for me anyway.

Look forward to seeing the telly documentary on Jack.

McGrath is interviewed in the documentary, he speaks honestly and humbly about his issues and the support Charlton gave him. David O'Leary comes over well in it also

He had some great players for Ireland and weaved them into a formidable team.

    Moran
    O’Leary
    McGrath
    Lawrenson
    Staunton
    Brady
    Keane
    Whelan
    Houghton
    Townsend
    Sheedy
    Aldridge
    Quinn

The current team could do with him and a few of them.

Hate to see family fall outs, shame about his fall out with Bobby TBH - Sad that he took that to the grave.
Don't think Townsend was a fan though.........

Can’t quite remember the source but I think they spoke cordially at the funeral of one of the Man U players a few years back.
