Reginald Perrin has to be one of the great TV characters; Fletcher in Porridge up there too, as is Basil Fawlty.

I would agree with this but to be honest all the other names put up are brilliant. We are lucky to be of the generation that could enjoy all these wonderful characters because as sure as $hit we will never see their like again!

I liked Rik Mayall but I always thought he pretty much played himself in every part and every character pretty much had the same loudmouth, aggressive and manic traits.

Yes Mick, I would agree that he was like that with his characters in Bottom & The Young ones, and probably in Blackadder as well.
But I thought his loathsome politician in The New statesman though, was different.
