    Going to the club every night - I wish that were true.
    But it’s not.
    I was a single bloke living on my own in the strike.
    So for 12 months I didn’t get a penny from anywhere and had to rely on relatives for food.
    Bus fares were 10p for any journey at that time. I didn’t have enough money to catch a bus.
    A life without any money in your pocket.

    I also had a mortgage.
    A few weeks after the strike Nationwide Building Society called me in for a chat.
    The conversation went something like this:
    Me - so we can extend the years I pay the mortgage.
    Nationwide - no, it doesn’t work like that.
    Me - so what are you proposing?
    Nationwide - you pay double this coming year.
    Consequently for the year after the strike I paid double mortgage - which meant of course not just 12 months without any money but 24 months.
    So no - I wasn’t going to the pub or club every night.
    Bad bad times.

    Meanwhile the kids of the 70s were loving going to bed cold and hungry every night. I STAND BY EVERY WORD I SAY.. west end, sawdust, darf road clubs we full every afternoon n night... all with your coal not dole bages....

    I wasn't a miner mi owd. My Dad and Grandad were but I worked as a journalist in East Lancs. Scargill did go to my cousin's wedding in Barugh Green though. Lovely bloke.
