Going to the club every night - I wish that were true.
But it’s not.
I was a single bloke living on my own in the strike.
So for 12 months I didn’t get a penny from anywhere and had to rely on relatives for food.
Bus fares were 10p for any journey at that time. I didn’t have enough money to catch a bus.
A life without any money in your pocket.
I also had a mortgage.
A few weeks after the strike Nationwide Building Society called me in for a chat.
The conversation went something like this:
Me - so we can extend the years I pay the mortgage.
Nationwide - no, it doesn’t work like that.
Me - so what are you proposing?
Nationwide - you pay double this coming year.
Consequently for the year after the strike I paid double mortgage - which meant of course not just 12 months without any money but 24 months.
So no - I wasn’t going to the pub or club every night.
Bad bad times.
Meanwhile the kids of the 70s were loving going to bed cold and hungry every night. I STAND BY EVERY WORD I SAY.. west end, sawdust, darf road clubs we full every afternoon n night... all with your coal not dole bages....
