Three ***** points for the Mighty Well

Motherwell took a huge step to safety with a 1-0 win over St Mirren at Fir Park.

Brilliant win. Not deserved but not quite the robbery will likely be suggested...Kelly barely made a save at 1-0 and along with scoring once we missed three other superb chances.

Massive credit to Graham Alexander. It's not been pretty but you'd have got long, long odds on us being all but mathematically safe with four to go when he took over and arguably even more when we didn't win in his first three. Re-sign a Scotland international this week (who admittedly should have cost us two goals today), beat Morton to get into the cup QF next Saturday and suddenly the mood going into the derby is positively buoyant.

It shouldn't disguise either what has been a debacle of a season or the extent of the rebuild needed in summer but after so many gloom months any kind of sun creeping through the clouds is more than welcome.

A very important win and a bit of karma on the penalty front, balancing out the non-penalty given when Erwin fell over his own feet. They should have had one when the ball hit Crawford’s hand and when they did get one McGrath’s effort was pretty weak and Kelly made a good save. Not pretty but ground out a very welcome three points.

The result was the important thing yesterday, and combined with results elsewhere means that we improved our position. I'd rather play poorly and grind out a result than play expansive entertaining football and lose. We're by no means safe and a lot could still go wrong but our chances of survival are looking better this morning. The injury to Roberts is concerning, especially as Watt also looks to be out of action.

Having most of the ball isn't the same thing as dominating the game. We actually had better chances than St.Mirren had and, give or take a couple of hairy moments by individuals - the attempted simulation of Beckenbauer by Stephen springs to mind- , our defence got through without too many 'bodies on the line' last - ditch stuff. We kept ourselves organised more successfully than we were doing a couple of months ago.

Agreed on the SOD comment ... more Franz Klammer than Franz Beckenbauer for sure !! Still, would none of us not have taken the 3 points in whatever way we got them? The fact that it riled Goody, Goody Goodwin is just a bonus ! Time to look forward and get ready for the new season when the home-based fans can attend 'in-person' so to speak
