I dont take much notice of the prem league as it is apart from a cursory glance at who is at the top and bottom so I would be even less interested in seeing what teams are doing in a super league. We need to kick em out of the prem and say the only way they can return is through the non league's. Who knows it could be maltby miners welfare v man u in a couple of yrs time hopefully.
Is this such a big issue or just progress
Let's face it it's been coming for a long time and what they are proposing is replacing the champs league with a new format.
It's not a closed shop as they are proposing that 5 teams can qualify each year. So there might be opportunities for the likes of Leicester in the future
The Prem could carry on and these teams are likely to field reserve teams in the domestic cup competitions but they do that anyway so no change there
The top six would get more money and be largely untouchable in terms of player recruitment but this happens anyway with the Sky money and turnover so it it just puts it to a whole new level
We know only too well that we can't compete with £60m sky parachute payments and most of these teams just waste the money anyway. It's not as though the likes of Reading have secured themselves a firm foundation is it
So is there any real change to how football is structured at the minute with Sky.
There are haves and have nots already and it's almost impossible to transcend upwards
The irony here.
No offence but this is the natural evolution of what Sky have already done to football.
The Prem was set up to ring fence the satellite TV money. Now you pay a minimum £55 a month (is it?) to put money in the coffers of Prem clubs and very little trickles down the leagues. Look at us as a great example and the budgets we are competing against.
You also have the Champions League behind a minimum £15 paywall as well.
So this rubbish about taking it away from the fans is too late. Happened 20 years ago easy. The Reading finances thread is another good point. Look how much clubs have to gamble to try and reach that Prem cash.
Also all the 'fans' wanting their club sold to some Saudi/US/Oligarch billionaire so they can pay millions for players from around the world. What a surprise those owners are interested in cash and nothing else. The no relegation/not needing to compete is the biggest problem, not taking the power from the corrupt FIFA, UEFA/money grabbing FA (£100 for an England shirt anyone?).
I don't agree with it but the only thing I would say is banning the players from national teams isn't right, it isn't the fault of the players and it is probably against all the rules on freedom of labour etc too.
It all stinks this of I want more. These "massive" clubs are showing their true colours but I must admit listening to the likes of Neville and co.complaining how greedy they are, is way OTT. He wasn't calling Glazer out when he was receiving his hugely substantial wages at Man U.So bleeding hypocritical and want to be seen as the "good guys".
The issue isn't wages, nor is it big clubs having more money than everyone else, just how things are. Everyone accepts that, always some bigger clubs and some smaller.
The issue is plain and simple. The integrity of football, of sport, is to compete on a merit based approach. You win most leagues, you get promoted, you win the premier league and you're champions of England. You qualify for the champions league by playing other teams over the course of the season. Those results determine that season who plays in Europe the following season.
No club, NO CLUB, has the right to arbitrarily decide that they are the 'elite' and therefore that will never change. You play, qualify and win based on performances on the pitch, not by the wealth in your boardroom. Yes the wealth helps winning, but it doesn't decide that there is no need for competition.
5 can qualify per season, 75% will, no matter what, be included year on year. Whether they win it or lose every game. That is a closed shop.
If the other 14 clubs in the PL want to stop this happening, they should be looking at invoking the PL Rule 9:
“Except with the prior written approval of the board, during the season a club shall not enter or play its senior men’s first team in any competition other than:
L.9.1 - The UEFA Champions League
L.9.2 - The UEFA Europa League
L.9.3 - The FA Cup
L.9.4 - The FA Community Shield
L.9.5 - The Football League Cup or
L.9.6 - Competitions sanctioned by the County Association of which it is a member.”
It looks a clear breach and one that would leave the others power to expel/invoke any punishments they want on the 6 in terms of the domestic league. Would being excluded from their bread and butter of domestic footy, leaving them only the midweek super league be enough for our 'top 6' (lol Spurs)? I imagine that this threatended exclusion would pretty much be too much for their game attending fans to put up with - why would they support having only limited midweek games to attend?? Although obviously the profit seeking owners are looking more towards the world TV audience...
Looks like Chelsea are the first to back out.
