It actually depends which version you sing,

The Band, Baez, many more have covered it,

Apologies to Shark I wasn’t aware that there were different lyrical versions. I’ve only ever known the one I posted.

Shark, like me obviously prefers the original, written and performed by the Band. Which includes "Stoneman" and "served". It is said (albeit by Wiki) that JB recorded the song having misheard the lyrics and, in later performances, did sing the lyrics as written

Wrinks, looking at the lyrics, you would have to be the driver of the engine to claim you 'drove on the Danville train' as in driving it forward down the line etc. I suppose Joan did make a mistake but it's the one I stick to, each to their own as they say.

I hope IBS has been in full voice today knocking it out at the top of his vocal range. I've listened to it again just for good luck.

    We need something, here goes..

Virgil Caine is my name and I drove on the Danville train
Till Stonemans Cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive
I took the train to Richmond that fell
It was a time I remember, oh, so well

The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the bells were ringin'
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the people were singin'
    They went, "Na, na, na"
