I realise that with a static matters are different.
For us (me and ‘she who must be obeyed’) the ability to make a last minute decision to just go...is great. We’re fortunate to be able to keep our small towing van discretely at the side of our house and able to shoot off with little notice.
Clearly both being retired helps !
Spot on Prando! I find it’s all about the site, where it is and what the facilities are. Do a little research first, trip advisor is great for this, prime example would be the Norfolk and Suffolk coast, Yarmouth for example you know the sites will be high volume with clubhouses lots of kids etc hence not one for a quiet break, just up the coast a little at Aldeburgh for example and it’s tranquility all the way, big pitches, right next to the beach and a short walk along the beach to the lovely town, it has a ban on any amusement arcades etc, hence not really somewhere you get lots of noisy kids so perfect for a quiet break.

I am not against mobile homes or caravanettes as I call them, far from it. I would love to have a refurbished VW Camper van but for the ability to essentially park up somewhere quiet and secluded for the evening and then motor on to somewhere else. I think my trouble is I am essentially rather anti-social and don't like being amongst people I don't know. My wife and I have lived in our house for over 30 years and except for the family attached to our semi I could not tell you the surname of anyone in the entire road. I ain't interested in socialising with neighbours at all, although if someone asked for my help I would give it.

I agree with this, I’m very similar, I’ve left my last two houses due to f u c k I n g idiotic, rude, selfish, arrogant neighbours.

I now live on a lovely rural lane with one neighbour to the side of me and nobody opposite.

Next door are early 50’s with no kids and like church mice, if they ever move I’ll try to buy their house or see if my daughter will move there.

I had a new build holiday apartment in Saundersfoot back in 2006 and one night some long term renters had an all night party next door and ruined the place for me, I went straight to the estate agents the next morning and put it up for sale!

I made a loss on it but I just wanted out.

Buying anything like a holiday home or vehicle is fraught with stress and danger especially when it’s with family.

It’s an awful thought, it’s going to end up with one or more of the four people getting really peed off with whatever.

Some years ago, we used to have a trailer tent, that was excellent, very easy to tow and much better than a normal tent as the sleeping area is off the ground and the rear of the trailer is the kitchen. I would recommend one.

Tenting holidays are for latent homo***uals and tree huggers.

I can’t think of a more miserable way of spending a holiday than with a bunch of soap dodgers under canvas.

You won't be wanting to borrow my tent this summer then Mick? Any chance of us pitching up in your back garden for a couple of nights in June so we can have a mooch around the Black Country?

That's a bigoted statement mate. I have a family and have gone camping in the past. I've camped in Switzerland at the base of the Eiger North face. Everything was spotless. No litter and the facilities were cleaned hourly. True some campers fit your description but don't tar everyone with the same brush

    No it isn’t.

You clearly don’t know me or my sense of humour and my great love of winding up Kets.

About four years ago we hired a six berth Motor Home and drove it down to a campsite that we use in Catalonia.. A word of caution if you take one onto the Continent. On Toll roads some of the larger ones are classed as a truck, and you pay the same toll rate which can be expensive if you travel long distances. Another downfall is fuel consumption, they see a filling station and turn in.

A number of people that we have met over the years that have them, often take bicycles, of mopeds or even tow a small car to get around in, when at their destination.

I have now purchased a second hand caravan and leave it down in store in Catalonia and have it put on site when we need it..

A MickD characteristic to which I have long become accustomed to!
