So there we have it, Hartlepool turns blue and the council elections are an unmitigated disaster for Labour.

It’s impossible for them to spin this any other way.

It’s been interesting to hear comments on the BBC this morning from Labour councillors who’ve lost seats, they themselves feel that the party isn’t relevant anymore.

This is a classic case of trying to face two ways at the same time, desperate to maintain their status within London with the “okay yah” elite living in Fulham etc and still calling everyone “brother/sister” and shouting “power to the people” up North.

You can’t have it both ways.

It’s interesting to me how the Tories don’t worry about places like Liverpool because they know that Boris is so disliked there and they don’t bother much with Scotland, they pretty much write these places off.

Starmer wear a dress made of yoghurt in Chelsea and a boxing glove up North FFS.

People want authentic and what they continually fail to understand within Labour is that the English in particular love a character.

Everyone loved Arthur Daley back in the 70’s and 80’s on Minder, it’s the same mentality with Boris, he gets away with stuff because a lot of us recognise our own flaws within him.

The perfect leader for Labour at this time would’ve been John Prescott if he’d been younger.

Another “character” who people can relate to and someone else who lead with his chin.

For as long as Labour continues to chase the Fulham set and the hard Left Scouser type it’ll fail.

Someone needs to confront the truth like Kinnock did with Derek Hatton’s lot in the 80’s.

Labour need to find themselves a proper leader, someone with charisma and kerb appeal but I suspect that after Starmer goes it’ll be a Rebecca Wrong Daily Corbynista that’ll get the job and so the cycle will continue.

The truth of the matter is that a new Left Centre party, an amalgamation with Lib Dem and Greens is what’s needed.

A party with a “rejoin the Eu” agenda possibly and with a strong green emphasis aimed at “normal” people is the only way I can see forward for those who don’t want the Tory lot in power.

No Des', but I'm sharp enough to realise Labour's current woes have more to do with navel gazing than naval deployments 😊 .

Mick, I totally agree with you about needing another party to be formed to hold this government to account going forward. Unfortunately, the Labour Party have totally misjudged the feelings of the British people and do not offer a credible opposition now. That is a real shame shame because we need to ensure that people have politicians who can challenge government policies rather than seeing things going through on the nod.

Oh, heck, yeah........I think I will bring this to the attention of the media so they can give the give islanders a good slagging for being racist, like the Welsh two-hat politician we had a few years back (he did not last long) and I can notify Government so they can act, albeit that could take some time. A name change might be in order. I’m thinking perhaps Multi Coloured Rainbow harbour should do it. What you think!

    How convenient...

The timing of those headlines were almost perfect for the Tories weren't they.

I will give the Tories this, as much as they screw the country over - their PR is fantastic. They know how to win votes from naïve people.
HMS Severn remains off Jersey at the time of this post.

We do need another middle of the road party to give an alternative to the Tories.
I have no issues with Boris as yet, apart from the vibrations from his helicopter breaking our bedroom window, but it's the likes of Rees Mogg and Gove who will replace him that worries me.
Boris is seen as too moderate by many Tory MPs, and I fear the backlash when he goes.
Labour lost their way after the death of John Smith who would have been a good leader, then we had Blair who was more right wing than Thatcher. The rest have been non entities. Corbyn was old style Labour but showed his true colours and lust for power at any price in the run up to the last election.
We need a party that is fair to all and one that distances itself from the extreme left and right wing elements.

John Smith was a very good man Des, he died in 94 when I was on holiday in Crete.

His daughter is actually a very good reporter on the BBC ( I think )

He was a true Labour bloke.

I think Andy Burnham is a proper bloke as well but it’ll go to one of those harsh looking young women Marxist types who look like they belonged in Hitler Youth in the 40’s.

As for your first sentence - Jesus Christ.

New Labour tripled the NHS budget when they got into power. Meanwhile, this Government gives nurses a below inflation 1% pay rise, whilst skimming off millions from the tax payer.
You're correct Blair's Labour did spend a lot more on the NHS but did they spend it wisely or did they do what Socialists invariably do and spend a lot of our money very badly? I recall the demos when they tried to close our local GH. I and a couple of friends of have who were nurses at the time have no memory of it being a good time. I think we have already established the number of hospital beds significantly reduced.

There was also a move to towards 'privitisation' of the service. A very dirty word to the Left. Funny old world.
