Sean Connery. No matter what character he played it was always the James Bond Sean Connery playing a part, even when he was the voice of a dragon or playing an Irish-born cop in The Untouchables.

I do think Nigel Havers has made a ridiculous amount of money playing, well, Nigel Havers.

There are some who would find it sacrilegious but to me Charlie Chaplin is overrated in comedy. No doubting his genius in the craft of making film but he was portrayed above all else as a comedian but I rarely found his films that funny. So, he was extraordinarily successful but not necessarily the worst but there were many, many film comedians from his era that were so much better at making audiences laugh.
