I posted a while since about former Derby County player Richard Keogh, who
was injured in a road traffic accident, with other Derby County players, after
being sacked, Keogh was awarded compensation by a tribunal.
Derby County contested the payment, & appealed.
The findings of the appeal.
The League Appeals Committee has heard & dismissed an appeal, under the
Regulations of the EFL by Derby County ( " The Club " ), against the decision
of the Player Related Dispute Commission ( " PRDC " ), in the case of
Richard Keogh.
The case arose out of events on 24th September 2019, in which Mr Keogh
was seriously injured in a Road Traffic Accident, & his subsequent dismissal
by the club.
The PRDC held that Mr Keogh had not committed gross misconduct, &
that he had not brought the club into serious disrepute, & that he had
been wrongfully dismissed by the club. ( Derby County )
The awarded pay out, was in the region of £2.3m.
Derby County in it, up to their necks.

I also said they should’ve been sacked as well at the time.
Driving under the influence is no laughing matter and a message should be sent out, player/s could’ve been killed, an innocent person could’ve been killed.
It did have an influence on the club, fans were disgusted by it and wasn’t there some sort of trouble?

I don't disagree with those sentiments at all but employment law doesn't work like that and Derby really should have known better.
They really are the architects of their own financial problems.

Tom Lawrence & Mason Bennett were the team mates who were with Keogh.
Derby County had been having a team bonding exercise, & the club laid on transport
for the players to be taken home.
The 3 players carried on drinking, when they left the venue, Lawrence was driving his car,
with Bennett his front seat passenger, & non driver Keogh in the rear seats.
Lawrence's car hit a lamp post, resulting in serious injuries to Keogh, the club were
thinking of sacking Lawrence & Bennett, both Lawrence & Bennett were charged
with drink driving.

Arguably Keogh was no more guilty than the others and certainly less so than the drunk driver but Derby wanted to make an example of him because he was club captain.
Whereas that may be understandable from a moral perspective it was unlikely to stand up if challenged in law and they really should have known that.
This has gone drastically wrong for them and they now have another financial burden round their neck due to their own incompetence.
