after leaving Everton. [ Pennington was on loan with Shrewsbury during 2020-21 season. ]

Pennington is Shrewsbury's 2nd pre-season signing, after the club signed 28 year old
left back Luke Leay , on a 2 year contract from Bristol Rovers.

Shrewsbury manager Steve Cotterill released 12 players, after the 2020-21 season.

Afolayan signs a 3 year contract, after being on loan at Bolton from West Ham
in 2020-21 season.

Some players were out of contract before June and may well be just free players. Not all contracts run the same.

Quite a few contracts run out after season end, plus quite a few end of June,
I think I put some players joining 1st July, plus some clubs release players
early if they have another club.

Clubs can sign players as soon as the season finishes. The signings don't become official till the transfer window opens in early June.
Players used to be able to do a pre-contract agreement with another club 6 months before their contract runs out.

Portsmouth remain in the driving seat for in-demand defender Clark Robertson – despite shock interest from Poland.

Ekstraklasa side Slask Wroclaw have joined the race for the 27-year-old, who is out of contract this summer having rejected a new deal at Rotherham.

The centre-back is involved in a transfer tussle between Wroclaw, Portsmouth, Ipswich, Aberdeen and Hapoel Jerusalem.

Stevenage FC Academy under 13 midfielder Leke Drake has signed for Manchester City,
for a reported fee of £400,000. Drake will join Manchester City's academy.
Manchester City beat Chelsea & Manchester United to Drakes transfer.

Stevenage it seems has a promising football academy, in which the club have some
decent players coming through their ranks, with three 17 year old players signing
professional contracts, after impressing in under 18's & under 21's games this
season.
Two of them Sam Dreyer & Timmy Smith have been at the club since playing for
the under 9's, plus a third player Alfie Williams since playing for the under 12's.

Alex Revell will be happy to have money coming into the club, which some of it
helping to cover wages, if he brings anymore players in.
