FIFTY (50) years of the European Championships

Ok who does actually remember this tournament right from the start, and Im only going back to Italy '68 here by the way, when we/England were then World champions of course.
(and I also think Roma was there as a kid cheering on the Iti'es, with his little red Tykes scarf on of course lol).

In those days the eight group winners then went into a random two legged Qtr Final draw against one of the other teams, and the four winners then made it through to the 'Finals'. Unbelievably, the Finals host nation were then chosen at random between the remaining four.
The Finals just consisted of four teams in a Semi final knockout basis, and they did also play for the pointless 3rd place consolation as well, in those days.

The Euro's Finals only started to become a tournament though in '80, and for some weird reason this was also held in Italy again!.

    EURO '68 (in Italy)

This was the first and only ever time that a 'toss of the coin' was used to decide a Euro's game after extra time. This is because penalty shoot outs, almost hadn't even been invented then!.

    Semi Finals
ITALY 0-0 SOVIET UNION (aet, Italy win on the toss of a coin!!)
    YUGOSLAVIA 1-0 ENGLAND

    3rd Place
    ENGLAND 2-0 SOVIET UNION

    Euro Final
    ITALY 1-1 YUGOSLAVIA
ITALY 2-0 YUGOSLAVIA (after a replay!)

    EURO '80 (in Italy)

This was the first time that a host nation didnt have to qualify, and with eight teams in the Finals now, this was now two groups of four. The two group winners played in the Final, and the two runners up played in the 3rd placed match.

    Group A
    WEST GERMANY 1-0 CZECHOSLOVAKIA
    HOLLAND 1-0 GREECE
    WEST GERMANY 3-2 HOLLAND
    CZECHOSLOVAKIA 3-1 GREECE
    CZECHOSLOVAKIA 1-1 HOLLAND
    WEST GERMANY 0-0 GREECE

    Group B
    ENGLAND 1-1 BELGIUM (R. Wilkins)
    ITALY 0-0 SPAIN
    BELGIUM 2-1 SPAIN
    ITALY 1-0 ENGLAND
    ENGLAND 2-1 SPAIN (T. Brooking, T. Woodcock)
    ITALY 0-0 BELGIUM

    3rd Place
ITALY 1-1 CZECHOSLOVAKIA (aet, Czechoslovakia win on pens)

    Euro Final
    WEST GERMANY 2-1 BELGIUM

There was a slight change to the somewhat disappointing format from before. Now the group winners would play the other group runners up, in the Semi finals. And the 3rd place match was now scrapped.

    BELGIUM 2-0 YUGOSLAVIA
    FRANCE 5-0 BELGIUM
    DENMARK 5-0 YUGOSLAVIA
    FRANCE 3-2 YUGOSLAVIA

    Group B
    WEST GERMANY 0-0 PORTUGAL
    SPAIN 0-0 ROMANIA
    WEST GERMANY 2-1 ROMANIA
    SPAIN 1-1 PORTUGAL
    PORTUGAL 1-0 ROMANIA
    SPAIN 1-0 WEST GERMANY

    Semi finals
    FRANCE 3-2 PORTUGAL (aet)
SPAIN 1-1 DENMARK (aet, Spain win on pens)

    Euro Final
    FRANCE 2-0 SPAIN

    EURO ’96 (in England)

This was the first time we/England had hosted a tournament in 30 years, since the World Cup in '66.
The number of teams had doubled again now and there were sixt*een teams in the Finals. So this meant four groups of four, and the top two in each group went into the Quarter finals and beyond. This was also the first time that the 'golden goal' rule was used and it proved to be very important in deciding the Final.

    Group A
    ENGLAND 1-1 SWITZERLAND (A. Shearer)
    SCOTLAND 0-0 HOLLAND
    HOLLAND 2-0 SWITZERLAND
    ENGLAND 2-0 SCOTLAND (A. Shearer, P. Gascoigne)
    SCOTLAND 1-0 SWITZERLAND
    ENGLAND 4-1 HOLLAND (A. Shearer 2, T. Sheringham 2)

    Group B
    SPAIN 1-1 BULGARIA
    FRANCE 1-0 ROMANIA
    BULGARIA 1-0
    SPAIN 1-1 FRANCE
    FRANCE 3-1 BULGARIA
    SPAIN 2-1 ROMANIA

    Group C
    GERMANY 2-0 CZECH REPUBLIC
    ITALY 2-1 RUSSIA
    CZECH REPUBLIC 2-1 ITALY
    GERMANY 3-0 RUSSIA
    GERMANY 0-0 ITALY
    CZECH REPUBLIC 3-3 RUSSIA

    Group D
    PORTUGAL 1-1 DENMARK
    CROATIA 1-0 TURKEY
    PORTUGAL 1-0 TURKEY
    CROATIA 3-0 DENMARK
    DENMARK 3-0 TURKEY
    PORTUGAL 3-0 CROATIA

    Quarter Finals
ENGLAND 0-0 SPAIN (aet, England win on pens)
HOLLAND 0-0 FRANCE (aet, France win on pens)
    GERMANY 2-1 CROATIA
    CZECH REPUBLIC 1-0 PORTUGAL

    Semi Finals
FRANCE 0-0 CZECH REPUBLIC (aet, Czech Republic win on pens)
ENGLAND 1-1 GERMANY (A. Shearer), (aet, Germany win on pens)

    Euro Final
GERMANY 2-1 CZECH REPUBLIC (aet, Germany win on the 'golden goal')
