    EURO ’96 (in England)


    This was the first time we/England had hosted a tournament in 30 years, since the World Cup in '66.
    The number of teams had doubled again now and there were sixt*een teams in the Finals. So this meant four groups of four, and the top two in each group went into the Quarter finals and beyond. This was also the first time that the 'golden goal' rule was used and it proved to be very important in deciding the Final.

    This was the first time that the Euro's were co-hosted by two neighbouring countries. The format was the same, and the 'golden goal' rule decided the Final again, for the second time in a row!.

    This was the first time in the Euro's where the first match of the tournament, featured the same teams as in the last match as well, the Final!.

    This was another co-hosted tournamet, and we/England failed to qualify for it due to the 'wally with the brolly', Steve McLaren!.
    Both Austria & Switzerland offered nothing to the tournament and it became clear that they were only there as automatic qualifying host nations!.

    This was another co-hosted tournament, and once again the two home teams didn't make any impact and were only there as automatic qualifying host nations!.
    Spain won it for the second time in a row, and they also won the World cup as well in between these two Euros finals, so this was easily their best generation.
