Chelsea bored their way to the champions league title this season. City were the more attractive team, and played better football. They lost.

If you want to bring up games that happened 50 years ago then fine. Unfortunately the game has changed. It's not about El Tel galvanising a bunch of talented piss heads any more (and that's more recent than the period you have talked up,). Modern, international football is in the main part...very boring. It's not Euro 96 anymore unfortunately.

The group games are usually about as good a predictor of future success as pre season friendlies. Just got to get through. That said, England are almost always beaten by the first decent team they play, and it’ll take a brave person who’d say that won’t happen again this time.

I’m with you Jacob. The negativity around the qualification is absurd. You simply don’t win tournaments in the group stages. All you can do is progress or leave. We have progressed without conceding.
England don’t have the players to play an open, expansive, all out attack game. We would get butchered.
England have some good players in forward positions but none are a Ronaldo, Messi, De Bruyn, Mbappe etc. We have decent players that have been built up to be better than they are (at this moment). We have deficiencies at the back and in goal and the only way to protect them is to play as we are.
As Jacob alluded to teams like Portugal won the tournament being attritional. Ironically the current Portugal side is better (on paper) and may get knocked out tonight. That’s because they have some fabulous footballers when they have the ball but go missing when they don’t (Ronaldo, Jota, Fernandez, Silva). You can’t defend with 6/7 players at this level of football.
Whilst we are still in the tournament we have a chance.
