OK, so what do I know about football, not much, but......
What on earth is the benefit of a defender passing forward to a midfielder only for the midfielder to pass it STRAIGHT back and without any desire to pass to the side or forward and (more or less), for all other players and their relative positions remaining unchanged??? Just a huge and frustrating waste of time (or not?), and as much (if not more) in evidence at the Euros as in PL matches.

As an example, this evenings game between Belgium and Portugal, where penetrative play (from either side), only became the more dominant playing style in the last 15 minutes or so, when Portugal HAD to play attacking football. Maybe we should start games with one side given a goal head start (maybe part if the toss?), make for some interesting games!
