Me too. 51 years ago next month I started work and I am proud to be able to say I never claimed any unemployment benefit even though I was made redundant twice. I was lucky enough to get another job before I was actually unemployed. I had 32 fantastic years of working with great people and good wages then the last 13 years were vile in a job I hated and could not wait to get out of and retire. Now, I absolutely love being retired and the thought of those early get ups to traipse into work makes me shudder.

48 years in August for me, but I won’ t get there. I retired for the second time on 30th June. Retired once at 55 but went back for another 8 years working in various rolls. I also have never claimed unemployment benefits after being made redundant twice in my te€ns.

My only concern about retiring at 63 is whether I will regret not doing it at 55.

I’m on the cusp of wrapping things up I have always worked since I was 14, went to university in my twenties and worked all the way through, a great mate of mine worked for an insurance company back in the day and I took his advice, opting out of serps and paying what I could into a pension, then over paying my mortgage means I can take my pension next year, that tied in with a lump sum I will get means I won’t have to do the ball breaking city job anymore, I have been winding down over the last year and honestly can’t wait, I think I will end up working a couple of days a week doing something I enjoy or something that puts back into society? Any advice from early retirees on here?

Started work at 18 and retired at 59 to do something I had always wanted to do, which was to write a book. Written 9 so far and surprised myself by having some success. It keeps me very busy but I don't think of it as having a job! I'm 67 now.

Started work in 1964, first pay check 1 pound, 17 Shillings and 6 Pence. Had probably a dozen jobs until 1974 until I hit on the one that would last the next approximately 44 years and take me all over the world.

Great days, just dust in the wind now though.

I started work exactly a week later than you Mickd. I will be 60 in October, presume you're about the same age? My first salary was £24.00 per week. At that time girls were encouraged to work in a bank, be a secretary, civil service or nursing. I did none of those although later joined the civil service, took very early retirement and had a few part time jobs since, have loved them all. Into all things property related now.

You were overpaid, I got £15.60 after National Insurance was taken out.

Then mum took £5.50 for my “keep”...😩

I was better off at school when I was getting £5 a week pocket money and keeping my dinner money🤣🤣
