Colchester United - Aug 7th - Match Thread

Colchester have turned themselves into an elephant's graveyard for old knackered Ipswich players.

That's almost entirely a different philosophy to our own. Instead of signing young players with potential and resale value, they've gone for age and experience.

Chambers, Skuse, Judge, Sears, expensive Ipswich rejects-are-us.

Also, their pre-season program consists almost entirely of games against teams from a higher level, whereas ours is the opposite.

It's an interesting contrast, opposites in philosophy and preparation. Who would predict which is going to work best?

These players that drop down, unless their body has given way they tend to have a lot to prove still and fancy some silverware.

Obviously the trick is to blend but if players of a certain calibre are there on the cheap as they wont have to re-locate then it would be stupidity not to go for them.

The youth philosophy also tends to be inconsistent.

I reckon the game will be a draw but I fancy Colchester to finish above us in the league.

Together those four players have a combined age of 133.

After todays s hit show they will pummel us if they have any quality.

We could still be playing and not have scored against Blackpool, the highlights are filled with woeful finishing.

If nothing else, a result like today's helps keep feet on the ground. We have a fortnight to tidy things up...

When was the last time we started a season with no loan outfield players?

Greg Abbott will be spinning in his grave.
