Didn't know about the skirlie!! But for a devastated 11 year old, he sold Joey ( I know now it wasn't his fault) but he couldn't do right after that

A dreich foggy afternoon in December 72, rumours flying around the ground as we drew 0-0 at home to Arbroath.

    Character-building.

Remember it so clearly, me and the old man walking up King St. hearing rumours, to have them confirmed when we reached the paper shop at the top of Merkland Rd.

    Devastated.

    I was kept in.
Caught stealing 10p from my Ma’s purse.

Escaped, hitched from Dyce to Aberdeen.
Someone game me a complimentary ticket as I waited in Merkland Road East.

Was in the beach end about an hour before kick off so easy for my father to find me.
He was in big trouble afterwards because we stayed to watch the game.
Rumours flying around that King Joey was gone.
Nothing official but he was missing as the teams ran out.
    0- f’uckin 0 versus Arbroath.

I had to miss the next midweek game as my punishment, which the Dons won easily with wonder goals from Zoltan Varga.

Actually, thinking about it now, perhaps the goals were exaggerated by my Da to rub in the punishment.
