Apparently there is a dark rumour that Jones suffered a head injury which resulted in mental illness, not the person he was previously. This is why Utd gave him a 5 year deal, as part of a package, when he was performing absolutely awful on the pitch, he signed a new contract to then never touch a first team ball again for 6 months
