    Alex Lacey update

Notts County assistant head coach Michael Doyle has confirmed Alex Lacey is working his way back to fitness.

The defender has not kicked a ball for the Magpies since being replaced at half-time of the 2-2 draw at Torquay in April.

Lacey then underwent surgery on his abdomen as he missed the entire of Notts' play-off campaign.

A date for the defender's return has yet to be confirmed but Doyle said it was likely the season will have started before he is back in contention.

"He is close and I think he will be out on the grass in the next couple of weeks," he said.

"Maybe a couple of weeks into the season we will see Alex back and that would be brilliant.

"He would be like a new signing. He has had a frustrating six months.

"Since the manager has come in, he's been having a bit of an issue with his stomach and has played on with it.

"He had to come out of the game at Torquay in the league which was a shame. We've missed him.

"He will have a lot to offer and with the way the manager wants to play, he will certainly improve the group."

Lacey has proven to be an excellent signing for Notts since his arrival on a free transfer under previous manager Neal Ardley in November 2019.

The centre-back helped Notts reach the play-off final that season but missed out on promotion to the EFL after they were beaten by Harrogate Town.

Once the 28-year-old returns to action he will be vying for a place in the heart of the back three along with Connell Rawlinson, Kyle Cameron, Richard Brindley and Adam Chicksen

Personally would like them to leave it a few weeks more to make sure. We should have the players to cope rather than throwing him in too early. The matches we would have wanted him for (Wrexhan and Torquay) are too early anyway so don't rush it.
