A number of firms, including EFL football clubs, have been named & shamed by the government,
for paying less than the minimum wage.
A total of £2.1m dating back to 2011, was owed to more than 34,000 workers, the named
employers were made to pay back the money owed, & fined a total additional fine of £3.2m.
Football clubs reported named & shamed, & made to pay back monies owed, plus a fine, were
Sheffield United, Oldham Athletic, Charlton Athletic, Crewe Alexandra, & Portsmouth, along
with Worcestershire cricket club.
It was found 6 workers at Oldham Athletic, were underpaid a total of £2,812 - 38pence,
between 1st April 2012 to 31st October 2016, the club had to pay a penalty of £1,924 - 74
pence to the Government.
Almost 50% named wrongly deducted pay from workers wages, including for uniforms &
expenses, while 30% failed to pay workers for all the time they worked, such as working
overtime, & 19% paid incorrect apprenticeship rates.
Some named high street retailers were - John Lewis, The Body Shop International,
Enterprise Rent a Car.
