Matthew Benham, the Brentford owner, has provided a model of how things can be done within the rules. He has gradually built the club over five years retaining his best players and gradually adding quality to the squad year by year. FFP allow up to £39 million over 3 years to be spent in excess of turnover.
Our owners are far wealthier than Benham but will not invest a penny of their own money on a gradual medium term improvement of squad quality. Quality will be sold rather than retained to ensure the owners don't have to put a penny into the books.
These owners have fans thinking they are brilliant for not contributing a penny of their own money and for not investing within the rules. Nothing crazy, bit by bit, year by year investment--is a reasonable approach if they have any ambition for the club.
