    Pay Day In The 70’s.

Remember queuing up to get your small brown envelope with an absolute pittance in it? 🤣🤣

I started work on July 3rd 1978 and earned £18.60 before stoppages! 😩

I earned so little that I didn’t pay tax but did still have to pay £3 in National Insurance and union fees.

Then when I got home mum put her hand out for £5.50 housekeeping money that left me with just £10.10 for the week 😢

I was getting £5 a week pocket money before I started work and keeping my dinner money ( unbeknown to my parents! ) so when I started work I was doing a 40 hour week and was actually worse off!! 😤😤

Tough times and a very tough era and a harsh regime in the workplace and at home.

Wouldn’t have had it any other way, it’s what made me.

The old pay packet though......long gone I guess!?

Always had the corner cut off, you had to count the notes through as they wouldn’t fix any issues once you opened it!

All the older blokes I worked with at the factory, when collecting their pay packet on a Thursday night, generally handed it over to the wife unopened.

Having worked in payroll for a number of years, you'd be amazed at some of the tricks the employees tried. One such trick was to wrap some double sided sellotape around a pencil and roll out a note from the end of the envelope. Got the staff to put a staple through the notes to stop that one. Was so glad when most employees reverted to BACS payments instead of cash.
