    Classic Adverts

Here is a 1980s Volkswagen advert which I regard as brilliant because it tells a simple story and finally makes its point in 55 seconds. It makes me smile.

But in the song by Alan Price only the words are new, the tune is far from new.

    Can you recognise the tune?

Wasn’t it a hymn? What a Friend we have in Jesus or summat. Then reworked during the wars?

    Great advert.

Tune was also used as intro to Ooh Aah Cantona song:

What a friend we have in Jesus,
    He’s a saviour from afar,
What a friend we have in Jesus
    And his name is Cantona….
    Ooh Aah Cantona,
    Ooh Aah Cantona…

Yes indeed Griff and Howoldboy. I accidentally stumbled onto the full song and the advert recently. The music seemed somehow familiar from another context. Over a few minutes it gradually dawned upon me.

It seems that at the time Alan Price got a few murmurs of criticism from religious folk for using the tune in the cause of mammon.

Here is Alan Price singing The Jarrow Song and then at 4:00 minutes he is joined by Paul Jones to do 'Changes' in which he sings a verse of the hymn 'What A Friend We Have In Jesus'.
