I then remembered what someone showed me.
I put a Malteser on the trap.

Next morning one dead mouse! Cat going crazy when I pulled it out, had us in stitches

A Malteser pal works every time as they have to use both paws to try to free or lift it off.
Same principle but pieces of dry dog food embedded in peanut butter works every time for mice and rats.

Good news . If you have mice then no rats.
    They don't get on.

Mice infestations have a very distinctive smell, maybe that’s what repels the rats

had a rat once in the garden , it was a smart fkr. every time I shot at it it jumped in the air. so fast it was incredible. for a chance aimed a foot above it , got it in the arse. then dispatched it.

Been said there's a rat within 2 yards of you when outside, so gotta be in the drains,
    or bushes.
We were sat outside Wetherspoon's Church House at Wath-on-Dearne, a rat kept running
across the area where people were drinking & eating, a few days later one of the staff
    caught it, took it away.
When outside bus shelters at Wath saw a rat heading towards library, must have been
reading 'The Rat Race' or 'the Great Escape'.

One mouse caught today in my boiled ham baited trap, reset traps with bacon rind on to bait em,
it was a big bugger, no wonder scoffing a full box of cadbury's heroes.
