    The offside law

Not totally inspired by the events of today, but I’ve been thinking that the offside law has needed overhaul for some time (I occasionally referee for the equivalent of shiny buttons here).

Instead of “being in a offside position” based on the last-but-one defensive player (which may or may not include the goalkeeper), it seems to me far more sensible and logical for it to be based solely on the last outfield player.

So, basically ignore whatever the goalkeeper is doing and just pay attention to the last “proper” defender.

Obviously, VAR will do its thing anyway in the big boy leagues, but this change would make life much easier for the assistant referee (posh name for lino!) to better interpret what’s going on and have fewer potential distractions.

This change would still mean 99% (at a guess!) of all current offside calls would still stand, but it would be an easy simplification to what is already a widely misunderstood law.

It also means the Klich/Rodrigo goal would’ve stood today.

Just twittered a version of that to Gary Lineker.

I’m assuming it will meet with tumbleweed there as well.

    Yeah, have all their albums.

Sorry about the Pats yesterday. At least 9ers are still in the hunt. Anyone but the Chiefs for me this season.

The Bills just wanted it more. I guess Tommy’s still in it too.

I briefly considered driving up to Buffalo to see if I could blag my way into the game, but the weather forecast was worse for there than it was for here.

It was -15C before windchill yesterday.

Both dogs took one brief look outside when offered the chance of a walk before heading straight back to the sofa.

Far too logical for it to be taken up and didn’t have enough phases or use the words passive and active to be taken up by the powers that be.

I'll just add to that Org on behalf of the players Goalkeeping Union with the rules of "Players in an offside position can also be offside if the referee decides that the player:

"Is causing interference or obstruction with an opponent"

"Prevents the opponent from playing the ball"

    "Deceives or distracts an opponent"

My kid brother now in year 2 of Bourse d'études Nantes FC [Scholarship] like other keepers is finding the current offside rules frustrating [on 3 yellows] in how Ref's & linesmen are not consistently applying the current law with no Var checking in his games.
So attacking players do have an advantage somewhat at the cost of pure defending & goalkeeping skills - rightly or wrongly.

Why don't we just bin the offside rule altogether? It would make life much easier and we would have more goals and exciting football.
