    He never bothered me as much as he clearly did some people, but given he'll presumably still be commuting from Brighton, it does seem like an odd job for him to be tempted by, even with his old pal there.

    The way he carried himself and represented the club around O'Donnell's death was incredibly dignified and for that alone - never mind that season, particularly September-December when we were breathtaking and then the finale - he'll always have my thanks.

    But there multiple occasions he simply wasn't professional - the way he left first time, the constant references to other clubs, his questionable attendance hanging McFadden out to dry as assistant and, finally the way he obviously just chucked it after the cup loss at Ibrox with one of the most self-indulgently pathetic interviews I've ever seen.

    So if anyone gives less weight to his first season, it's no wonder he's one of the last popular managers we've had in ages. Football managers might be in it for themselves but most have the grace not to be so crass about it.
