Talking to a colleague today about this situation and he explained to me that major oil and gas contracts had been signed with Ukraine by Shell and the likes back in 2013.....after exploration wells had proven huge stocks of untapped gas in Ukraine....where in Ukraine? The Dombas region and a massive gas field was discovered of the Crimean peninsula....extending out into the Black sea.......
2014 Russia invades Eastern Ukraine and annexes Crimea.....
These two sites were confirmed and would have proven reserves bigger then anything else on mainland Europe...outside of Russia.....
The Netherlands has some gas and Norway of course........but the invasion has taken all these reserves under the occupation and led to a cancelling of the contracts......

You still think the war is about the minority of Russians living in the East of Ukraine??

Never did. Eventhough it's former Russian territory it's obvious what they've been after. That and Ukraine's other natural resources which are plentiful. All languages understand money.

But why would Putin and Lavrov care? They will be brown bread in 15 years time max if not much sooner!

Certainly regarding Putin it's legacy. He has openly wanted to compare himself to Peter the Great on more than one occasion.

The concern is that the longer the war draws on the higher the chances of divisions amongst the Western allies and a weakening of resolve as the cost of living crisis (much of it fuelled by Putin's actions) bites. There is already a degree of media fatigue about Ukraine as the issue slips down the headlines. Putin, however, won't mind the long haul and will continue regardless of any operational failures because he has the numerical advantages. More military aid is needed sooner rather than later now because, albeit very slowly, Putin is winning at the moment and the consequences of that are dangerous.

Russia turning back the gas valve to Europe already........

Last week, Russia’s state-controlled energy company Gazprom announced the second cut to gas transported via the pipeline, reducing supplies to just 40% of capacity.

The Italian energy firm Eni has reported a halving of Gazprom’s gas supplies to Italy, which gets about 40% of its imported gas from Russia. Meanwhile, the French network operator GRTgaz said France had not received any Russian gas via Germany since the middle of May.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov last week blamed maintenance issues for the reductions in supply, a reference to earlier comments saying Russia was unable to secure the return of equipment sent to Canada for repairs.

Why does anybody want more money then you can spend?
    Answer:.......Greed.
    Greed is an addiction too......

But beyond the simple obvious answer the more complex answer lies in the Empire mentality....they still think like one and therefor act like one.....badly....
Look at any of the old empires of yesteryear.......UK included....France, Portugal, Spain and so on....it is for these reasons that many people still support Russia's actions......Africa certainly has no love lost for European ex empires.....nor India, nor China...oh wait...thats exactly how it is dividing in the world..

Crowdfunding for Ukraine.....strange one this...but this is what people can now do online when a war is far away.....
    Report from Sky news............
Ukraine to receive free drones after crowdfunding campaign

Ukraine is being given three drones for free after a crowdfunding campaign raised £16.3m to buy them.
The Serhiy Prytula Foundation was set to buy Kyiv's forces four Bayraktar TB2 drones after citizens and international supporters donated in huge numbers.

But Turkish technology firm Baykar said it will not accept payment for the drones and will send three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) "free of charge to the Ukrainian war front".

"We ask that raised funds be remitted instead to the struggling people of Ukraine," it said.
"We are touched by their solidarity and resolve in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
"Baykar prays for a just resolution and lasting peace."

Led by Ukrainian actor and politician Serhiy Prytula, The People's Bayraktar Project surpassed its original target of raising £12.2m to buy the equipment.
"Thank you for appreciating the ability of Ukrainians to unite! We are impressed with your decision," Mr Prytula tweeted in response.
"The saved funds will be spent to ensure our victory in close cooperation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine."
