Covid is not over

Today in the UK there were reported 153 deaths from Covid and 91,345 new cases of Covid.

These sort of figures were regarded as high at one time, now nobody mentions them.

I have a mildly sore throat and a slightly runny nose. I expect to be fine though if this had happened a year ago I’d have been bricking it.

I reckon the death figures are misleading. Given that those who get really poorly are either already unwell or very old (stop that at the back!) then some of those included could have karked anyway, or covid hastened something that would have happened in the following few months. I reckon the true number is probably about half of the ‘within 28 days’ figure. Remember, “normal” influenzas typically see off about 30 each day at this time of year anyway so the difference isn’t huge.

On 21 February the Government announced that it was lifting all remaining Covid restrictions in the UK.

On that date the Governments own website advised that in the 7 days to 21 February UK hospital admissions (7 day average) were 1,147.

The latest figures from the same site reveal that in the 7 days to 15 March the 7 day average was 1,787.

That means that hospital admissions due to Covid increased by 56% in the 3 weeks after the announcement.

Johnson removed the restrictions to appease his backbenchers. Not because of scientific evidence.

This Government's contempt for the NHS and its workers is astonishing.

Panic over.

Asked about the case numbers on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the Health Secretary Sajid Javid dismissed the idea of complacency.

He said: “For anyone to suggest that the government or our advisers are unbothered would be clearly wrong. We have a plan for how, as a country, we learn to live with Covid, and that plan is working.” England was, he added, “successfully showing the world” how to live with the virus.

4 weeks later (21 March) the 7 day average had increased to 2,054. An impressive increase of 79%.

Not content to rest on their laurels after filling hospital beds quicker than any other country in the G7, the Government has a new plan to ensure the number of Covid cases reduces quicker in the UK than anywhere else in Europe.

Sajid Javid is confident that by stopping the supply of free testing kits, less people will take tests and consequently the number of recorded cases will reduce significantly.

This plan could be another global leader for the Government.

5 weeks later (last figures 28 March) and the 7 day average has increased to 2,314. An impressive increase of 102%.

Yes they have doubled the number of hospital admissions in only 5 weeks.

Not only this but the number of deaths have increased in the same period from a 7 day average of 112 to a 7 day average of 159.

The increase in deaths of 42% may, at face value, seem low when compared to the number of hospital admisssions, but these things take time.

Give the Government the credit they deserve.

Deaths figures for England

Due to a processing error, a number of people who died within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test in 2022 were not reported in a timely manner. 2,714 deaths within 28 days of a positive test were added retrospectively on 6 April 2022.

The backlog of deaths has been added to the cumulative total for England and the UK. Newly-reported deaths for England and the UK on 6 April 2022 represent the numbers that would have been reported without the extra retrospective deaths."

How is it possible to monitor success or otherwise of the Government's Covid policy if they can't even provide reliable information on deaths?

Should we quietly forget the retrospective deaths and pretend every thing is going well?

I'm sure that is what Javid and Johnson would like.
