    I'm in the camp of never having heard (or if I have I've forgotten) about the knocks/jumps at the pantry door.

    "Bread and catchit" was always the answer to 'What's for tea?" in our house.
    "The same age as my tongue, and a bit older than my teeth" was the answer to "How old are you?"
    "To see a man about a dog" was the answer to "Where have you been?" and "There and back to see how far it is" was the answer to "Where are you going?"

    ...and people wonder why we all grew up to be so pedantic?
