Blackpool worked with Stonewall on this and it was announced at a press conference, they wanted attention.

Agree with the first comment, does anyone care anymore? and why should anyone care, other than the person being themself.

In women's football it isn't an issue. In mens football there is the macho comment banded around yet how macho are the footballers rolling and diving around at the slightest touch.

Yes, and it “merited” a slot on the 10 o’clock news to report it.

Not as though there’s much else to report on in this perfect world

Makes a lot of sense surely to use the resources of an organisation that has much more experience in this area. And as for publicity, I imagine the hope is it reaches other young people, who may be struggling, in a managed way. In years to come it’ll be a non-issue as it is in many workplaces but football’s not quite there yet.

Totally disagree. For a young footballer to do this takes immense courage and there's no doubt he will have challenges ahead as a result. I hope it gives others the courage to come out as well. There must be dozens (maybe hundreds) currently living a lie. Maybe some at our own club.

Unfortunately Stonewall has in recent years attracted publicity for their political stance on subjects rather than the rights of gay people.

Even Channel 4 TV fell out with them.

This shouldn't even be a story, but sadly it is.
Give the kid a break, see it for what it is,a very brave, and selfless act,it's a shame that no one else has been able to do the same,a sad reflection on the football World.

If they want to come out or keep their personal lives out of football or any other profession should be entirely up to them and not be pressured into it.

    Correct

It should be a "so what" response, sadly he's likely to be the "political football" for those groups that make a living from blowing up such things for their own benefit

Let him kick a ball and get on with life
