As a soil scientist, I know that soil compaction is one of the problems in many areas. I am not an expert in playing fields, but with the complication of undersoil heating and drainage, it's a complicated business. Hope they get it right this time. Less slope next season, too!! How will the players adapt??

OK WBEQ ... I'm now intrigued, and in no way want to sound patronising. You being a soil scientist sounds '***y' :-) Do elaborate if you can ... I'm guessing it's about getting the best return from planting crops in arid lands, but as I often do, could be talkin pi5h. But, I'm really interested. And my 2 boys (in their mid to late 20's) are very into sustainability, so any pointers are very much welcome. Thanks

Since I moved from Airbles Street in the early 1980's, I have worked at the Agricultural Research Council here in Pretoria, mainly doing soil surveys for agricultural use. Involves describing, classifying and mapping the soils, but also looking at which soils are best for which crops (dryland and irrigated), and also which soils can easily be eroded or otherwise damaged by misuse. Includes coal mine rehabilitation after the soils have been stripped and replaced after open-cast mining. It's all about helping to conserve the soils for the next generation, so yes, sustainability is the key.

AB's thread following the work on the new Fir Park surface hit a new high today with a video of the sewing machine working its magic. Well worth watching.
