The times..they are a changin'-and not necessarily for the better! Traditionally, I think tennis was generally regarded as more of a rich persons sport despite the popularity of Wimbledon and it's good that a greatest range of people are now involved in it but think it sad that the more boorish elements are entering the sport. (On the other hand, I equally dislike the over-turning of tradition and the woke introduction of gender free toilet facilities at Wimbledon!)

    Remember Borg!?

Retired with 11 majors at 26 years of age and won all 4 Grand Slams including 5 successive Wimbledon titles which was unheard of?

    McEnroe’s record doesn’t really compare.

Only 7 majors and never won the Australian or the French and never even made the final in Australia.

If Mac had trained as hard on the tour in his career as what he has from 40 to 63 and had more composure he’d likely have as many majors as Nadal.

The reason Borg was so cool on court was due to his parents, his attitude on court was so appalling during his early ****s that they banned him for playing for weeks.

He was so shocked by this that he decided to change persona completely and just say nothing!

He was a magnificent player to watch, for five years he was totally dominant and by 26 he was bored as he’d done everything multiple times.

I was very lucky in that a few of us were allowed to briefly watch McEnroe v Borg on centre court during a school trip to Wimbledon (can't see that ever happening these days!). Back then I had the time to spend the hours watching Wimbledon on telly and Borg was definitely my favourite player.

Def, marvellous player, the ”ice man”. And, he and McEnroe got on very well off the pitch btw.

But, it would have been so boring watching ”Borg vs Borg” or ”McEnroe vs McEnroe” - what really made it interesting was watching Borg vs McEnroe - opposites (style of play, attitude, temper etc) do attract.

Completely agree! McEnroe did liven up the court though and it goes back to characters and aggression - you need it! Same on the football pitch - Mulumbu was a leader and took no prisoners!

11 Grand Slams, but I believe 5 Wimbledon and 6 French? Never won Australian or US Open, I believe.

You are of course correct Thomas.

Both players gained their majors from just two of the four big tournaments.

Borg won the French six times which is held in greater esteem than the Australian or the US Open.
