I’m quite partial to a G&T or two, especially late afternoon, just before dinner.
The quintessential English drink and now back in fashion.
I was always an American or Irish whisky drinker or Rum. Not a big drinker of spirits just an occasional glass.
Gin I couldn't stand I thought it was the most overrated drink going. But when we had a walk to the Navigation last year I had a draught Scrumpy Jack and my wife had a pink gin. We tried each others drinks and it tasted nice.
Then some weeks ago a friend in the Hinksford always finished with a large G&T. So I gave it a whirl and it's one of the most refreshing drinks there is.
The tonic has quinine in it which is why it was so popular in India in the day's of Empire.
Also if you drink quite a bit of it at a test match England don't seem so bad.

Drank a pint and a half of home distilled gin at a house party when I was 15.

Couldn't even stand the smell of hairspray for months after, as this was during the 80s there was a lot of women wearing hairspray about.
Never touch the stuff now except for in cocktails such as a Long Island Iced Tea as the smell makes me feel like I'm drinking totally rank perfume.
I love, love the stuff. Drink plenty of it. Also, in the Hinksford pub. May have seen you 55??
Similar experience when young as you '68. Couldn't stand the smell of it even for the next thirty odd years. However, a mate of mine is partial to a G andT and persuaded me to try one. Strangely enough, I enjoyed it and now find it a very refreshing and pleasnt drink, especially in the summer.
Had the same experience with cider. Had a party to celebrate finishing our GCE's on one of the lad's farm. Mind you it was Herefordshire rough cider brewed on the farm. Was I I'll? Never forget it. Again, never touched cider for years but of late have enjoyed it again. Strange how your body reacts.
If you get chance, go to the Bombay Sapphire distillery, in Hampshire. Fascinating how the botanicals work, and you can mix your own recipe.
I’m not a drinker but in my youth a gin and tonic was something I would occasionally have and enjoy.
Then at a girlfriends dad’s birthday I got p I s s e d on Pimms in 1982 and was violently sick and since then I haven’t been able to sniff gin without wanting to puke.
A shame actually because it’s such a clear, crisp drink.
I went out on an apprentices night out in the early seventies and drank 13 gin and limes. When I woke up I was in a girl's flat and had hydrangea blooms stuck to my head and pillow. The girl said you can go home now and take your flowers with you.
