For me the FIA have put themselves in a difficult position. In reality any penalty should apply against the season the offence was committed in, but because they manipulated the outcome of the championship anyway, deducting points from Red Bull and its drivers would be a huge embarrassment for them.

They could deduct points this season and Red Bull would still comfortably win so they have a get out there, BUT whatever they do do is going to set a precedent so they really need to be careful what they do.

This is all sounding very Wycombe like in its logic - the penalty should go against the season it relates to. Not sure we thought that a year ago when they came looking for cash

Different sport, different sporting body and likely different rules. Whatever the FIA rules say, they should stick to them. If that means points deductions in 2021 and Lewis is World Champ then that is what it is. Points deductions in 2022 whereby RB still win the constructor's title and Max maybe has to wait for this weekend to win the driver's crown, so be it.

As MA says it's different, football FFP is measured over a longer period, how can you unpick that if you apply penalties retrospectively ?

Using the logic that penalties should not be retrospectively applied is like saying lance armstrong should only be punished for future races after he was found guilty.

The problem is the rules on punishment is so wishy washy, it should be defined that if you do x you get y punishment.

Then there can be no argument.

When the rules were written I think 1/ the FIA underestimated how much of an advantage 5% of $145m could get and 2/ the teams agreed to the punishments for minor and major breaches because they all thought they'd go over, its only now that they've all come in under budget that they aren't happy that the punishment is going to be lenient

Rumour has it says FIA have offered a 25% reduction in wind tunnel time for next season an a fine but accepting that will be seen as an admission of guilt which they won't want as it damages the brand, its Helmut and Homer thats doing that on their own

Yep, F1 should be governed by the EFL, they'd have took last years championship off them

So, $7M fine and a 10% reduction in wind tunnel time. Looks like Masi's wish remains in tact.

Does the $7M fine come out of next season's budget, this season's budget or can Red Bull drinks company pay it from petty cash?

For some reason when I try and edit a post on my phone it deletes it..but anyway I'll try again

It is a fine so won't affect budgets, and the reduction in wind tunnel time red bull will circumnavigate by sharing data with alpha tauri
