    OT - Dutch F1 Grand Prix 2022

... is this weekend. I've never been to an F1 race. That changes this weekend. I'll be at Zandvoort to watch the race. Row 11 of the stand in between "turns 10 and 11". It's extremely expensive and I have no doubt that I'll see much less than I would watching on the TV at home but it's one of those things I've always wanted to do so it'll be another tick on my bucket list.

Have any of you attended an F1 race? If so, what was the experience like for you?

I’ve been to hundreds of motorsport events as a spectator or (pathetically) a competitor. I’ve even stood in falling snow watching F1 ‘prequalifying’ at Silverstone. But I’ve only been to one F1 race, the 1984 Monaco GP and sorry to say I vowed after that never to go to another GP. I LOVE F1 to the extent that it would be my Mastermind specialist subject, but the experience of watching 30 (at the time) cars drive past for 5 seconds 30 times (the GP that year was cut short) just did NOT turn me on. I just don’t get the appeal.

However, if you are in the midst of the Verstappen Army I’m sure your experience will be better than mine, maybe more like a footy (or cricket) crowd.

On a related note, are you aware that a George Medal was awarded to a driver called David Purley for an incident at Zandvoort? Check it out

Been to loads of Moto GP, and one F1 at silverstone.

No you don't see as much but the atmosphere is fantastic, and i am sure if Max wins it will be amazing (for you anyway ha)

I am hoping you are disappointed in that respect though, hoping the Mercs come good, and Lewis or George can pull of a win.

I think unless there are reliability problems Max will win, hes been a class apart from the others this year and not even needed Michael Masi's help this year in securing wins. Max will definitely deserve to win his first WDC when it come at the end of the season.

My uncle took me to Oulton Park back in the late 1960’s. I’m not honestly sure if it was F1 or not but there were some big names, Jim Clark, Jack Brabham and Graham Hill amongst them if memory serves. There was a saloon car race before the main event and I remember being fascinated by seeing a Mk1 Cortina crash and the windscreen fall out in one piece. Don’t remember being impressed by much else but each to their own.
    Enjoy the day.

I used to stop and watch people trying to park when I was "on the trolleys" at a large supermarket in my younger days, that's about the extent of my motorsport spectatorship.
But jokes aside, I imagine the atmosphere will be unique and impressive, hope you enjoy it!

I did British at Brands Hatch and a couple of Canadian in the 80s. I recall the sounds and smells mostly but the racing itself was fairly dull - except for the fact that the lovable failure that was Vittorio Brambilla got a point!

Er indoors used my ticket yesterday. She enjoyed the day out, also not been previously. Between turns 10 and 11 happens to be a DRS zone so we may see some overtaking. The stand was a sea of orange and will be the same today and tomorrow. I'm expecting a carnival atmosphere and it seems the beer isn't overly extortionate at €6.25 for half a litre.

If the DRS ‘works’ (ie produces difficult overtaking opportunities) that’s a good spot. Enjoy the orange fog!
