I don’t know. James Anderson is probably the most famous alumnus. Long after I had left. One of my old friends is now Sir Vincent Fean.

I think the bar should be raised so all pupils could be taught in the "grammar stream" which should be the norm not the exception.

I also think free uniforms and free school meals should also be a given. That would "level things up" from the get-go don't you think?
My only reservation,BT, is that not all children have the same talents and abilities. Whilst I think it is right that all children are given the same opportunities, wherever possible, some are more academic than others, whilst others are better at skills like woodwork, metalwork and the like.

Some are better at languages, some, like me, music and so on. I was not exactly a star at the sciences.

We had core subjects that everyone had to take, then we were allowed to change subjects and so on.

As regards uniforms and meals I do agree. I was proud of my uniform, albeit that my mother could barely afford it. I felt like I belonged and it certainly avoided any thoughts that some families had more money than others.

I used to work next door at the Fire Station Swiss, when we knocked off in the late afternoon we'd have a brew in the Rec room and all the Teds pupils would be going past heading home. I wouldn't have seen you though, I didn't start there until 1974. Although I never went there I used to play football for Teds Old Boys, this would be sometime in the late 70s I think.

We must have been! Nigel Bradley. I was great friends with Paul Cannon, Vinnie Fean and others that left at the end of 5th Year - 5N as it was called as we were doing 9 O Levels. The late, great Jock Traynor was the form master. Sixth Form at the top of the then new Tower Building.

I remember the Fire Station being built, sinkov. It must have been the mid-sixties as the playground over-looked the site. There was great interest in the tower and how it would be used. Happy days.
