England have only beaten one team ranked above them in the world cup since 1966,it was 20 years ago with a penalty v Argentina scored by Beckham in the group stages and it finished 1-0.
As far as the knockout stage goes the last time they beat a higher ranked side was indeed during their home world cup 56 years ago.
