    Transfer spending gone insane?

Never really paid much attention to some of the bleating from the European leagues, but has the PL/Championship transfer spending gone too far now?

    The spending is pretty crazy.

However, you also have to keep it in perspective. I'm sure some of our posters who are brighter than I am have a better feel for numbers but i don't think it's a stretch to say you receive $250 million + a year in revenue for being in the prem. If you are relegated and lose almost all of that then spending big money to stay up just becomes a business decision.

Team strength becomes a big factor on the January spending. I think last year we didn't spend much since we were very concerned that we'd be relegated and lose most of that money. The KJA situation didn't help either. It was pretty fresh at that time. I suspect they, like many others, think that the situation this year is much different. Our squad is very good. we can play against the very best teams this year and be competitive. that was not the case last year. I wonder if Everton, Wolves, Bournemouth and S ton felt that they are not strong enough to justify spending big. They really did not spend that much.

I suspect that the 49's sale is weighing really heavily this year. I think Radz want's out. It's tremendously stressful being an owner in the prem. The 49's won't buy us if we are relegated and they obviously gave the green light to spend some cash. The American influence is geared toward making a big marketing push toward the US. It's a huge potential market that's dominated by the scums, citehs, lpools and Barcas of the world. The one big negative, of course, is that we are stuck with Ted. Even my good friends here that were huge fans of his hiring are admitting he seems to lack the " x factor" that makes a coach and team brilliant.

I do think our spending this year was brilliant. I hope I'm proven right. I think we will be good enough that even with the worst coach in the prem well get out of the relegation battle and focus on the future.

Possibly but it does seem a little rich coming from the Italian league that in the 1980s and 1990s did exactly the same thing. Nearly all of the top players were in Italy and this was often reflected in their success in Europe (noting there was a period when English teams were banned).

AC Milan had more non nationals than they could actually play so often had to choose a player to leave out that would walk into any other team - look at their 1994 squad which had the likes or van basten, boban, Papin, Laudrup, Savicevic etc and only 3 could play in Europe.

Whether you like it or not Sport is now main stream entertainment and for good product those streaming content will pay a premium.

The leagues I feel a little more sorry for are in Holland, Belgium and Germany.

Real Madrid and Barca have also been doing the same thing for years.

Is there too much money as a more general point - almost certainly but that is modern sport

Two wrongs don't make a right? Yes, past history shows that none of the mainland European leagues are blameless, but it's at least in part BECAUSE of what they did that the rules that are referred to in the article were introduced. The point regarding "investment" from owners (groups or individuals) is perhaps more key here than the impact of revenue, hence what Tebas is saying about clubs spending what they EARN, not what they are given by generous owners. All clubs, in all "premier" leagues across Europe have played fast and loose with the regulations, Italy, Spain, Germany all of them. However if the EXISTING rules WERE policed, and real sanctions applied, as Tebas is suggesting should be the case, perhaps we would have a more competitive European environment, where performance on the pitch is a much more significant influence on spending than the depth of the owners pockets?

Agreed but does make complaints from Italy seem rich
