I can only speak from experience. When I left school late 70’s - I could have had the pick of any jobs and had far more disposable income than the kids do of today. Doctors were on tap - there were selective state grammar schools for bright kids - universities were free for bright kids and oh yes getting on the housing ladder - it was easy as banks were throwing money at you including interest free mortgages which are a recipe for debt. Now the kids of today have to present a business plan to borrow 1,000 for
f uck sake! Banks have even stopped interest free mortgages because of the awful press and rightly so and mortgages are a nightmare to get compared with my first one in the early 80’s which were handed out like candy!

Even interpersonal skills with Covid have gone out of the window for boy meeting girl unlike the swinging 60’s and 70’s.

Don’t blame those on benefits either when they would be no better off on the poxy minimum wage!! I refuse to sell our goods on Amazon as this company is one of the biggest tax dodgers in history and why would I want to make these c unts richer!! You can’t attack those on benefits when you make people like Amazon richer by selling on their platforms or buying from them.

The best gift in my eyes a child can have is a first class education then it’s up to them! Even that’s been taken from the brighter kids of today with the old 11 plus axed due to bitter parents whose kids were too thick to get in.

Everyone to their own but I found the 70’s and 80’s easy compared to what’s been offered to kids today. I even know a mate who was allowed in the 80’s to have mortgages on 15 rental properties ( not much asked ) and now he’s super wealthy! Can you imagine someone doing that in 2023? T een suicides are sky high in 2022/23 because kids can’t see specialists ( unless private ) which were on tap in my younger days.

I have no idea which heavenly society you lived in during the same era as me AL?

Can you enlighten me as to where I missed out on these interest free mortgages in the 80’s and all this free money being thrown around by banks?

    I must’ve lived in a parallel universe?

The country was on its f u c k I n g knees when I left school in 78, we had the best part of 3 million people without jobs.

Where exactly were you living during this golden age of free finance and jobs in abundance?

Anybody else out there remember this era of “milk and honey” because I missed it…..by several million f e c k I n miles!?

You must have missed it Mick. Never had so many job offers when I left school. Mortgages and borrowing were easy ( compared to now ) with very few checks - many getting multiple mortgages for buy to let etc! Remember interest only mortgages which were irresponsibility thrown at people? Thick people though didn’t think that on an interest only mortgage at the end of the term - the balance had to be paid off otherwise it was repossession at the ripe old age! Banks stopped all this but it was a winner for some to borrow - borrow and borrow. Many with numerous buy to let’s had ten plus properties on the go as banks rarely battered an eyelid. Chap I know became very wealthy on getting numerous mortgages!

I had a bank loan of around 10 grand to buy my first all singing and dancing mini at 18 with very few questions asked! Getting a mortgage now or a loan for even a grand the borrowing companies want blood.

For me the 1970’s and 80’s was easy compared to today. I had my first mortgage of around 90,000 at 24 and no where near the stringent checks made which you find today.

Even in the 80’s/90’s you could have self certification if your deposit was greater than around 60% so a financial advisor could get a mortgage for you - no questions asked as the security was in the equity. Not any more!

Borrowing the tightest it’s ever been in history. Don’t forget many wealthy people made it on taking a gamble by borrowing - multiple mortgages - land - stocks and business. All stopped now so how do you get on the housing ladder or start a business if you can’t get a decent loan?

NHS worst it’s ever been! More t eenage suicides ever because it’s impossible to see a GP and if someone does - the waiting lists are 3 months plus to be referred to a specialist. More bothered about t een suicides which is heart breaking and the highest it’s been for years.

Education - well there was the 11 plus for bright kids in the good old days! Now competition is frowned upon so not to upset the not so bright kids! Incredible!

Can’t remember in the late 70’s/80’s a cost of living crisis where many couldn’t afford to feed their kids or the elderly to frightened to put their energy on.

Girl meets boy - great in the 70’s and 80’s but even that’s screwed for the kids of today after Covid!

No I feel for the kids of today. A family member who is 73 and taught all her life as a Head of a school says the same.

We all have differing views but for me it was joyous when I left school compared to what the kids find today!

PS - a t eenage kid was found hanging from a tree in the woods near me last week. Far sadder than some wealthy football player/manager doing the same who could get all the help money can buy. That’s the difference! So much more pity for someone who has nowt and young in life than someone who can afford to go private who has experienced life!

Oh - young people have to deal with Brexit which was forced through by mainly the older generation. Rich this when it will be the younger generation who will suffer and illegal immigration is worse than ever!

The threats of a nuclear war are at the worst point than it’s even been! We have a dictator who is trying to be Hitler 2 committing mass Genocide. Can’t remember hearing about this on Europes door step when the Abba tunes were ringing out!

No - I fear for the younger generation!

That’s the point many did to stop Brexit and protesting against it in many towns. Brexit was pushed through by the older generation but sadly the rights or wrongs of it will effect mainly the younger generation!

Not enough of them voted on Brexit.

Two of my kids didn’t bother and none of my staff aged between 20 and 40 did.

Most of the 20’s I chat with at football didn’t bother, most of the nephews and nieces in the family didn’t either.

I’m sure there must be figures available to show the % of each age group that did bother to vote, maybe someone on here knows.

A lot of the 18 to 30 year olds I know wouldn’t have a clue where to go to vote or how to fill in a voting slip.

Whenever I go to vote for anything it’s remarkable how many people seem to be 50+ and how few are the younger brigade.

Same apathy many show towards work.

I didn’t like Corbyn at all but the one thing you can say about that version of Labour is that in their early days they seemed to gain traction with the youth element to some degree.

At the moment I don’t know if a single 18 to 30 year old within my personal orbit who belongs to a political party and have just one friend aged 26 who is politically motivated and he supports Labour, he was a Tory before going to university funnily enough.

Change has usually relied on youth, it remains to be seen if todays youth can be a r s e d to motivate themselves more than the 50+ in society.

There's a bloke on this thread who swears blind he was against Brexit from the start, isn't part of the younger generation and has openly stated many times he doesn't vote in elections and didn't participate in the Brexit ballot.

Can you guess who it is? I'll give you a clue. His name starts with the letter A. I'm off before he comes back with a really, really long reply. Or even a very short one which includes the word 'off' 😊.

I’ve always voted in elections but if we had a general election tomorrow (next Thursday, rather) there isn’t a party that I would want to vote for. I might decide depending on what I thought of the individual candidates in this constituency, even that would be difficult as I can’t remember the last time we had a candidate from any party come round canvassing.

One of the leaders of my ukulele band is a local councillor for a nearby village (Green Party) and he does a lot for that village but if he stood in a general election I couldn’t vote for him as if he won, we would lose our drummer and lead singer! What a dilemma!
