I read Robert Graves 'Goodbye to All That' not long ago. He tells about his experiences in the trenches in the 1st World War, which regiments you wanted either side of you, which ones you didn't, and the French were certainly amongst those you didn't. He hadn't got much time for the French at all, none of our lads seemed to, and when they were talking in the Officer's Mess he says it was a common theme that, as far as they were concerned, we were fighting on the wrong side in the war, we should have been fighting alongside the Germans, who were more reliable, decent and much better soldiers than the French.

It's a good book, I'd highly recommend it.

"King Charles and the Queen were greeted with enthusiastic crowds holding German and British flags on their state visit to Germany.

Newspapers such as the Berliner Zeitung and Süddeutsche Zeitung had even published helpful guides on royal protocol in case their readers met the King and Queen.

The tips included how to curtsey properly and how to correctly pronounce the word “Ma’am”, which the papers said should rhyme with “jam” and “lamb”.

You've got to admire the thoroughness of the Germans, they're even giving out guides on proper curtseying, cap doffing and forelock tugging. I'll see if I can get one for BT's bedtime reading, his attitude towards his King does sometimes lack a certain deference.

The Tories and the Whigs are part of our rich history, the Left are relatively poor and more recent. The German's lack our mixed heritage which has made us unique and has given us a sense of humour that germans could never come to understand since they hardly have one. Nations evolve, the Royals will always be part of our rich history but it doesn't mean they have to be part of our future. So endeth today's ramblings, back to more important matters tomorrow evening.
